The art of engraving on gold and silver has been practised in Scotland to exacting standards since the beginning of the eighteenth century. It reached it’s apogee in the years leading to the First World War when economic circumstances and a discriminating clientele provided many opportunities for engravers to demonstrate their skill. Engravers have always specialised in the type of work undertaken. Inscriptions, traditional Highland decoration and naturalistic ornamentation ore just some of the specialities but those engaged in heraldic work had to combine engraving skill with knowledge of the science of armory. As a result the heraldic engraver was one of a small, but select group. Present day conditions have made that group even smaller and Ian Grant remains the sole practitioner of the craft in Edinburgh. His training and experience are impressive. He left school in 1956 to commence instruction with Hamilton and Inches, the most prestigious firm of silversmiths and jewellers in the capital. After two years spent aquiring basic skills he was sent by the firm to be an apprentice with Mr James Anderson. He was a second generation specialist engraver of heraldic and ornamental design who handed on to Ian Grant the great traditions of nineteenth century practise in the craft. Eight years were spent receiving instruction from Mr Anderson which Equipped Ian Grant to become the first foreman of the engraving department set up by Hamilton and Inches in 1965. Since 1968, Ian Grant has managed his own business where his unique skills of silversmith and heraldic engraver have earned him distinguished commissions. His work has been featured in a recent book on heraldic art, and his clients have included The Heraldic Society of Scotland, The Order of the St John in Scotland, the Clan Donald Land Trust, the Clan Hunter Society, the Burns Club of London, and many individuals from both home and overseas. He will design and make to order either single items or multiples. His craft is one that provides potential for posterity. An engraved piece or commissioned piece of silver by Ian Grant will outlive both creator and client, providing heirlooms to be treasured by future generations. | ||
